The course treats comprehensively the subject of analysis of the linear and nonlinear electrical circuits. It starts with basic concepts of the circuit, signal and linear as well as nonlinear model of physical elements. Then basic methods, laws and principles concerning the analysis of resistive, d.c. and a.c. circuits are presented. The resonant RLC circuits and transient analysis of the linear circuits is also given.

The course treats comprehensively the subject of analysis of the linear and nonlinear electrical circuits. It starts with basic concepts of the circuit, signal and linear as well as nonlinear model of physical elements. Then basic methods, laws and principles concerning the analysis of resistive, d.c. and a.c. circuits are presented. The resonant RLC circuits and transient analysis of the linear circuits is also given.


Lecture contents

  1. Basic concepts. Element, circuit, network, signal, power, energy. Linear and nonlinear circuit elements, coupled inductors, ideal transformer. Independent and controlled cources, equivalence of sources, operational amplifier (6h).

  2. Linear and nonlinear dc circuits. Kirchhoff`s laws, Tellegen`s principle, Thevenin`s and Norton`s principle, connections of elements, one-port and two-port, n-port. Superposition principle. Nodal and loop analysis, network matrices (5h).


  3. Steady-state linear circuits with harmonic sources. Complex amplitude analysis, equations of elements, immittances, phasor diagrams. Active, reactive and complex power, maximum power transfer (5h).

  4. Steady-state circuits with periodic sources. Fourier series analysis, Parseval`s equality, rms value, superposition analysis, powers. Elementary nonlinear circuits, rectifiers. Small-signal analysis (4h).

  5. Resonant circuits. Resonant frequency, Q-factor, normalized resonant curves, half-power points, passband. Serial and parallel circuit, dynamic resistance (3h).


  6. Transient analysis of linear circuits. Classical method, switching laws, simplified analysis for the 1. order circuits. The 2. order circuit. Laplace transform, immittances and analysis (4h).

  7. Linear two-ports. Matrices, input immittances, transfer functions, frequency, pulse and step responses (3h).




  8. Tutorial contents
    1. Signals and elements, power and energy, voltage and current dividers, connecting of elements. Sources. Analysis of simple dc resistive circuits (4h).

    2. Analysis of linear and nonlinear dc circuits (4h).


    3. Complex amplitude analysis of linear cirucits (4h).

    4. Analysis of linear circuits with periodic sources (4h).

    5. Resonant circuits (4h).


    6. Transient analysis of the 1. order circuits (2h).

    7. Laplace transient analysis (4h).


    8. Two-ports (4h).
