Short description:

The course introduces the basic concepts of the time and frequency analysis of electrical circuits, including constitutive circuit elements, time and frequency linear circuit equations, transient and steady state analysis, transfer function, transmission of signals. It also introduces fundamentals of analog signals representation and analysis. Understanding how these concepts are related, and how circuits respond to signals of different frequencies is the basis for understanding modern communication and signal processing, and analog electronics as well.
The lectures provide the students with the explanation of the core material. Examples explaining the concepts and techniques are discussed in order to provide a qualitative understanding. The tutorials have more quantitative approach and enable students to apply the material introduced during the lectures to solve some problems. The laboratory provides the students with hands-on experience.

Full description:

The course introduces the basic concepts of the time and frequency
analysis of electrical circuits, including constitutive circuit
elements, time and frequency linear circuit equations, transient and
steady state analysis, transfer function, transmission of signals. It
also introduces fundamentals of analog signals representation and
analysis. Understanding how these concepts are related, and how
circuits respond to signals of different frequencies is the basis for
understanding modern communication and signal processing, and analog
electronics as well.

The lectures provide the students with the explanation of the core
material. Examples explaining the concepts and techniques are discussed
in order to provide a qualitative understanding. The tutorials have
more quantitative approach and enable students to apply the material
introduced during the lectures to solve some problems. The laboratory
provides the students with hands-on experience.

  1. Basic circuit elements (2h) of linear time invariant circuits and their constitutive equations.

  2. Power, energy (2h). Passive and active elements. Ohm`s law,
    Kirchoff`s laws.

  3. Parallel and series connections (2h). Superposition principle.

  4. Time-domain circuit equations (2h). Response of first order
    circuit.

  5. Transient and steady state (2h): second order circuits.

  6. Harmonic signals (2h). Sinusoidal steady-state analysis of linear
    circuits.

  7. Sinusoidal steady-state analysis (2h). AC power.

  8. Thevenin`s and Norton`s laws (2h): superposition principle.

  9. Resonant circuits (2h). Filtering.

  10. Laplace transform and its application to electrical circuits (2h).

  11. Transfer functions (2h).

  12. Frequency characteristics (2h): impulse response.

  13. Periodic signals and Fourier series (2h).

  14. Fourier transform (2h).

  15. Application of Fourier transform (2h).


Tutorial contents
The tutorials enable students to practice analyzing of electrical circuits and signals, and transmitting properties of 2-ports.

Laboratory contents
The laboratory consists of five experiments:

  • Circuit elements: linear and nonlinear resistor, inductor,
    capacitor.

  • Circuits with sinusoidal excitations.

  • Resonant circuits.

  • Transients in circuits.

  • Fourier series and transform

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

There are two components of the assessment in this course:

  • Laboratory: 40 points for five exercises (5*8).

  • Tests: 60 points for two open problem tests.


The total is 100 points. The final result is based on the following
pattern:

  • 5.0 >90 points

  • 4.5: 81-90 points

  • 4.0: 71-80 points

  • 3.5: 61-70 points

  • 3.0: 51-60 points

  • 2.0: 0-50 points
