This course deals with basic concepts of the classical electromagnetic field theory based on Maxwell equations and their applications in electronics and telecommunication. The lecture starts from detailed presentation of Maxwell equations and their physical interpretations. Then the phenomenon of electromagnetic waves and its mathematical description is considered. The second part of the course is devoted to practical application of electromagnetic waves in electronics and telecommunications. We consider subjects like transmission lines, waveguides, resonators, fibre optical guides and antennas.

Lecture contents

  • Differential operators used in field theory (2h).
  • Maxwell equations and their physical interpretations, media classification (3h).
  • Plane wave propagation in lossless and lossy media, attenuation, skin effect (5h),

  • Electromagnetic energy and power flow (2h).
  • Waves at media boundaries, boundary conditions, reflection of waves upon normal incidence (4h).
  • TEM transmission lines (4h).

  • Waveguides and resonators (6h).
  • Antennas (2h).

  • Lightwave propagation (2h).

  • Tutorial contents
    Excercises (15 hours per semester) is devoted to illustration of the theoretical content of the lectures with examples of practical applications and numerical calculations. Students learn to determine basic parameters of wave propagation in various media and parameters of devices based on electromagnetic wave propagation (like transmission lines, waveguides, resonators and antennas). Special attention is devoted to undestanding, drawing and interpreting of field patterns.

    Laboratory contents
    Laboratories (15 h) take place in a computer laboratory. Modern software tools are applied to illustrate the wave phenomena. The considered subjects are:

    • TEM waves in lossless and lossy media: virtual measurements of wavelength, wave impedance, attenuation;

    • normal incidence of TEM onto PEC and PMC walls: understanding of reflected waves transient phenomena, steady-state virtual measurements of reflection coefficient, standing wave ratio, and phase-shift between E- and H- fields;

    • normal incidence of TEM waves onto dielectric half-space and layer media: single and multiple reflections in transient state, steady-state virtual measurements of standing wave ratio, verification of half-wave and quarter-wave transformer concepts,

    • modes in hollow transmission lines: TEM lines, rectangular and circular waveguide; resonators constructed as section of such lines;

    • effect of dielectric filling and insets on frequency characteristics and modal field patterns in transmission lines and resonators;

    • fields radiated by axisymmetrical antennas.

    The emphasis is put on critical correlation between numerical results and analytical predictions.
