The aim of the module is to present methods of signals and linear systems description and analysis. The continuous as well as discrete signals and systems are discussed. The concept of Dirac delta is introduced and the idea of impulse response of a linear shift invariant system is defined. The convolution (continuous and discrete) operation and the response of a linear shift invariant system to a given input signal are presented. Circular delay and convolution for finite length discrete signals are introduced. The Fourier transform and the discrete Fourier transform are introduced for the spectral signal and system analysis. The properties of the Fourier transforms are analyzed. Sampling operation and the fundamental sampling theorem are discussed. Spectra of continuous signals and their sampled version are compared; the idea of circular frequency is introduced. The Z transform as a tool for the discrete signal and system analysis is presented. Continuous and digital filters are introduced and their properties are discussed. The elements of filter design theory are analysed.
